OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSING
Dedicated to providing multi-disciplinary occupational health services to a wide range of organisations in the North East of England, I.O.H. has opportunities for qualified occupational health nurses & experienced nurses seeking a career in this speciality. If you are outgoing, enthusiastic & work well within a multi-disciplinary team, you may be the person to fill one of the following vacancies:-
Occupational Health Nurse - North East: You should be a registered nurse with previous experience &/or qualifications in occupational health and able to work independently or as part of a team. All positions include sickness absence and fitness for work assessments, health promotion and health screening.
Occupational Health Nursing Advisors/Trainee: You should be a registered nurse with a minimum of 2 years post-registration experience, have genuine interest in an occupational health career & obtaining the appropriate qualifications. Previous occupational health experience desirable, but not essential: training will be provided in all aspects of occupational health including health screening, fitness for work assessments & health promotion.

The role of the Occupational Health Nurse
IOH’s Occupational health nurses work in a variety of settings from various industries, to the public sector. You may work individually as an independent occupational health practitioners or as part of a larger occupational health service team, where you may work alongside Occupational Physicians, Physiotherapists, Counsellors and even Health and Safety Professionals.
The occupational health nurse role includes:
- Understanding the effects of work on health and health at work.
- Absence management referrals.
- Health screening in the workplace.
- Supporting first aiders in the workplace.
- Health promotion or ‘wellbeing’ work. This may include the prevention of health problems, promotion of healthy living and improvements to working conditions.
- Education and training of line managers and general staff in tool box talks and training sessions.
- Counselling and support as part of a referral process.
- Contributing to Health and Safety Teams producing risk assessments.
Knowledge and experience
Knowledge of human resources and health and safety issues is essential. It is also useful to have awareness of health promotion and education. Health screening and stress management can also form a key part of your duties in the modern workplace and therefore knowledge of these is beneficial.
