Employers unaware of resources
Employers need to make more use of the existing NHS support to promote wellbeing at work, senior HR practitioners agreed at the Business in the Community (BITC) Workwell Summit. Asked what role the NHS had in supporting health in the workplace, a panel of experts said that employers should make more use of tools and data from organisations like NHS Choices.
Questions were also asked about the potential to reinstate regulations such as the HSE stress management standards.
But Graeme Collinson, group director health, safety and environment at Centrica, said: “For that to happen there would have to be clear evidence of a chronic issue that’s causing significant problems. This would be negative measures like continuing high stress levels as well as some very bad cases. But they would probably start off avoiding regulations.”
Paul Litchfield, chief medical officer at BT Group added that the BITC guidelines for public reporting on wellness and engagement, meant there is no need for regulations. These guidelines follow a recent Ipsos Mori study, which found that the majority of FTSE 100 companies failed to demonstrate the business relevance of a healthy workforce.
